Keeping Kids Creative

Dear Readers,

We have all heard the buzzwords of the knowledge-based economy - creative, innovative, resourceful. We are told that our students will need these abilities, not just facts and figures, to thrive in the workplace of the future. And we,their teachers, need to equip them through creative teaching. Hence, here I try to unravel the nuts and bolts behind these ideas, to find out what creative teaching is all about and how it can be implemented in the classroom.

Join Me and I will appreciate it very much if you sign in my guestbook and leave your comments.

Flip-Flap on Shorty

This final project before I leave the school was done by my year 6Nilam students.I still remember ,they managed to complete everything  in May 2010.Very happy that, even before I left the school, the CCL activities and projects were carried out as usual.
As for Flip-Flap On Shorty, I prepared manila cards for them.Cut into 4 big, long stripes then folded into 6 panels.I purposely named this project as Flip-Flap On Shorty as they used Shorty, the literature book for year 6 so if you readers out there want to use another book, please feel free to change the name of your project.
They can use both sides of the panels to draw the pictures in the books and they have to write or type interesting parts of the story which really captured their intention in continuing reading the book.

Interesting or important dialogues are a must in this project so as to make sure that they know the strength of the story. They just need to copy the paragraphs or dialogues, the beutifying part is of course A BONUS !

By choosing the two main characters in the story and the dialogues above showed that the students understood what I want them to learn through reading this book.Reading and copying the paragraphs and dialogues help them to write better in their exam.(Using correct punctuation is vital here)

On the first panel, they wrote the title, author and the illustrator of the book read. Then ,they continued with the illustration and dialogues from the first chapter.

These are the final products of Flip Flap On Shorty.

Learning Literature Is To Love Literature

Words can explain on their own........

The Mini Puppets of Characters

Here are some of the mini puppets of the characters in our literature books. The students may use these mini puppets to explain about the characteristics learnt .

By doing these on their very own, the interest grew deeper as they have to know the background and details of every character eg Tanya, Mother Bear,Film-maker and Grandma.

My students kept these characters in their own personal portfolios and they wrote their
personal responses on each of the character.

Character and word card

As for these , are the combination of character and word card. The students can utilize these two items when there is a HOT SEAT session.

And what is HOT SEAT ?
Check it out in another entry of mine and we'll discuss deeper on that.
Another main character of Tidy Your Room,Tanya

The puppets are kept in their personal portfolios

Laminated items can last longer if taken cared properly.

More of the Character Quilts

The best  three Character Quilts created by my beloved
students.

On the other panels, I proudly present the Book Covers  illustrated by
my dearest ones.

First, Second and Third placing

I valued what my students did very much. With great effort  and commitment shown during the hours spent in completing their tasks, they also learnt to value each character in the story. For this stage - Tidy Your Room, Tanya!
They were so happy and proud when I announced  the best 3 winners of the competition and their masterpieces were pasted high up on the wall of my CCL Room. Totaly in clear view of everybody who entered the room.
And guess what.....they asked for more mini and extended projects so that they can win more prizes.
So happy that they actually dived into the world of literature so deeply. Through competing for the awards and prizes, my students learnt literature..........

The Greatest Day Ever

This was our final phase (Phase 4) in ELTC,Kuala Lumpur after coming back from RELC,Singapore. We did an exhibition on all the projects done from all the states. It was really a surprise when Mr James and the other lecturers requested me to present all my projects in front of the audience and the VVIP- Dr Choong- The Director of ELTC.

Honestly, to be chosen as the representative was an honour to me and the Kedahan as well because we have actually 'been competing' with the other states - Selangor and Pahang. Alhamdulillah, with the moral support given by my other friends, I did it well.Dr Choong was very happy and congratulated me on the presentation done.Saying that she is truly very impressed with all my projects, Dr Choong encouraged us to work harder in order to make the learning of literature fun and interesting for the students back home.

Happy to be able to inspire the others.

What I finally learnt......

Busy working on their extended project.

Recalling :
My task to my year 4 pupils was to carry out their own Character Quilt Projects on the short story Tidy Your Room, Tanya! I grouped them in groups of five and explained to them that they have to come out with the group projects and reward will be presented to the winner.

Firstly, I showed them a sample completed Character Quilt which I have done earlier. Then I explained on how to carry out the task. I provided to them a piece of grid manila card for each group which I have drawn the squares. They have to identify the main characters and the setting of the story. Then, they have to draw them in the squares. Finally, group representatives will act out some of the actions from the story based on what they have drawn on the Character quilts.

What surprised me so much was to see them cooperating together and coming out with the drawing. It was really a pleasant surprise to realize that many of them could draw very nicely and they have such great hidden talent in drawing and beautifying their masterpiece.

Acting out a part of the story :
The Film-maker with mother bear and her cubs

When the time comes for them to present their actions, I was again showered with surprises as I did not realize before this that my pupils could really act. They were not shy and they performed excellently based on their own understanding of the text.

Prizes for the winners
That critical incident made me realized that I should not underestimate my pupils’ personal abilities. By giving them the tasks, I managed to finally uncover their hidden talents. I was really happy about that and promised to myself that I will continue planning different activities which will further enhance their personal talents and abilities.

The final product finally pasted on the wall of
my CCL Room
